Stereotip Mahasiswa IAIN Pontianak terhadap Agama Baha’i

Abstract

There have been numerous studies about students’ stereotypes on Baha'i Religion in the midst of the heterogeneous and multireligious people of West Kalimantan. In general, the people of West Kalimantan do not really know and understand the existence and teachings of the Baha'i religion, so stereotypes and certain judgments were built based on perceptions in accordance with their communication and interaction to the followers of that religion. The focus of this research was to know and understand the stereotypical form of the students of Islamic State Institute (IAIN) Pontianak through lecturing process in Interreligious Communication courses. To answer the problem, researcher used the concept of Thung Ju Lan that categorized stereotypes with the terms “foreigners” and “cultural differences”. This descriptive research used qualitative analysis method and the data were obtained through observations and in-depth interviews before and after following the course of Intercultural Communication. The object of the research were the seventh semester students of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Department academic year 2015-2016 Faculty of Ushuluddin, Adab and Da'wah IAIN Pontianak who enrolled Intercultural Communication course. Based on the research results, some forms of stereotype of IAIN Pontianak students were in the category of “foreigners” and “cultural differences” category. As for stereotypes in the category of "strangers" or people who were outside their own group's ideals, formed some thoughts that denoted the teachings or the community of Baha'i such as denying that god could manifest into man (Baha'ullah), and disagreeing on the unity of religion. While stereotypes in the form of cultural differences, which judgment were formed based on the perception of the group in which the person could be categorized. The cultural difference in the context of this study was the assessment of other religious traditions that were linked to their own religious tradition. Some forms of students’ assessments in the context of cultural differences such as; whether the Baha'i religion have a god, what is its name; whether Baha'ullah is really a messenger of god; whether there is a miracle; whether his scriptures are truly divine revelations; whether the Baha'i teach the prayer or fasting; and whether the prayer or fasting is the same as praying and fasting in Islam in general.


[Kajian tentang stereotip mahasiswa terhadap agama Baha’i terdapat banyak sekali di tengah-tengah masyarakat Kalimantan Barat yang heterogen dan multireligius. Secara umum. Secara umum, masyarakat Kalimantan Barat tidak benar-benar mengetahui dan memahami keberadaan dan ajaran agama Baha'i, sehingga stereotipe dan penilaian tertentu dibangun berdasarkan persepsi melalui komunikasi dan interaksi mereka dengan pengikut agama tersebut. Fokus dari kajian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dan memahami bentuk stereotip mahasiswa Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Pontianak melalui proses ceramah di program Komunikasi Antaragama. Untuk menjawab masalah tersebut, peneliti menggunakan konsep Thung Ju Lan yang mengkategorikan stereotipe dengan kategori "orang asing" dan kategori "perbedaan budaya". Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif dengan metode analisis kualitatif. Sedangkan data diperoleh melalui observasi dan wawancara mendalam sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti program Komunikasi Antarbudaya. Target atau objek penelitian adalah mahasiswa jurusan Ilmu Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam semester VII tahun akademik 2015-2016 Fakultas Ushuluddin, Adab dan Dakwah IAIN Pontianak yang mengikuti mata kuliah Komunikasi Antarbudaya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, beberapa bentuk stereotip mahasiswa IAIN Pontianak berada dalam kategori “orang asing” dan kategori perbedaan budaya. Adapun stereotipe dalam kategori "orang asing" atau orang-orang yang berada di luar cita-cita kelompok mereka sendiri, membentuk pemikiran yang melambangkan ajaran atau komunitas Baha'i seperti menyangkal bahwa Tuhan dapat bermanifestasi menjadi manusia (Baha'ullah), dan tidak menyetujui pada kesatuan agama. Sedangkan stereotipe dalam kategori perbedaan budaya, penilaiannya dibentuk berdasarkan persepsi kelompok di mana orang tersebut bisa dikategorikan. Perbedaan budaya dalam konteks penelitian ini adalah penilaian mahasiswa terhadap tradisi keagamaan lain dikaitkan dengan tradisi keagamaan mereka sendiri. Beberapa bentuk penilaian mahasiswa dalam konteks perbedaan budaya seperti; apakah agama Baha'i memiliki tuhan, siapa namanya, apakah Baha'ullah benar-benar utusan tuhan; apakah ada mukjizat; apakah kitab sucinya benar-benar wahyu ilahi; apakah Baha'i mengajarkan doa atau puasa; dan apakah doa atau puasa itu sama dengan berdoa dan berpuasa dalam Islam.]
